Designed by architect Hugh Maaskant (1907-1977) in 1972. Originally build as an academy for for fine arts, with typical elements like the glass corridors on the north (no sun and shade). Ateliers were centered around a huge hallway, and connected through balconies, stairways and undefined spaces - somewhat unpractical.

Plans to demolish the building werd stopped by a group called BAM (Preserve Architecture Maaskant) chaired by professor Harry Peeters. He managed that the building became a monument. The owner - Fontys University of Applied Sciences - wanted to sell the building, which was highly incourant. Former president of the Tilburg University Board Hein van Oorschot however proved to present a blessing in disguise, having the firm ambition to enlarge the campus. In this period the University bought the Simon building as well, and the Montesquieu building was erected as well as (in 2009) Intermezzo building, ment for both offices and student housing.

The Academia building houses lecture rooms, the International Office, Language Center, student Desk, Student Psychologists and a restaurant as well.

The enomous sculpture in the hall depcits a moving horse and is made by Arthur Spronken (1930-2018).
